The SS Richard Montgomery is a US Liberty ship that ran
aground on the Nore sandbank in the Thames Estuary, off Sheerness, in
August 1944 - still carrying roughly 1,400 tonnes of
unexploded munitions. Her masts remain visible above the waterline, she sits inside a
permanent exclusion zone, and she has been politely declining to explode ever since.
